Bo’s Coffee Philippine Origins Product Line with the Big Boss

De Cafe, Cappuccino, Espresso, Frappuccino, black, hot, cold, etc. People love coffee and we enjoy drinking it in a variety of ways. I started drinking coffee at a young age, my mom loved it and she didn’t mind me having some. Back then, the only coffee I knew of was those bought in a sachet. Oh how much more I needed to learn.

 

I was first introduced to the world of brewed and grinded coffee some time in high school, it was DELICIOUS. But I am no coffee expert, and I love my coffee as much as most of you do. Little did I know that there’s an art to drinking coffee, just like wine.

Everything was set up in front and we were eager to taste that fragrant coffee! Soon, a tall man in blue enters the room and introduces himself as Steve. This really nice man shakes the hand of every single person in the room and repeatedly introduces himself while asking our names as well. Turns out, he was Steve Benitez, the owner of Bo’s Coffee. It’s not often that the owner himself presents the product, and it’s even more rare that the owner makes the first move and introduces himself. I felt like his attitude that day really reflected what Bo’s coffee is all about.

Coffee is usually named after the area it originated from but it’s not something common in the Philippines. So why not start doing it here too? Why not be proud of our rich soil and the coffee beans it can produce. Well, that’s exactly what Bo’s Coffee plans to do, and they started that by showcasing 4 of their best homegrown coffee beans! Bo’s Coffee invites everyone to try out their Single Origin Arabica beans which originated from Mt. Matutum, Benguet, Sagada and Mt. Katinglad.

 

Aside from Philippine Origins, Bo’s Coffee is also looking to heighten its customer’s experience by providing a Pour Over demo in select branches.

The Pour Over Method

“The pour over method is where showmanship and flavorful coffee collide. It values precision, requiring a certain water temperature and the right amount of water poured in a slow and circular manner over the cone containing the filter and ground coffee. This, in turn, produces an intense and aromatic cup of coffee you’ll definitely enjoy. It’s also the perfect method for the Philippine Origins Arabica beans.”

 

Mr. Steve Benitez used this method as he and his barista prepared a cup of freshly brewed coffee for everyone. We got to try all 4 “flavors” and though I am no expert in coffee, I had fun learning the art of cupping or coffee tasting. They all were similar but had small and sometimes unnoticeable differences.

  • Sagada – The first cup I tried was the Sagada. I found it to be bittersweet. Bitter because it was black coffee but then sweet like a fruit, or more like the aftertaste of a fruit. If you’ve tried tobacco, it’s like a part of it was blended in with the beans by accident. I don’t really know how to describe it but here’s the “official” flavor profile.

Flavor Profile: Sweet, nutty, and well-balanced, with hints of chocolate and fresh tobacco.

  • Benguet – There was a faint taste of wine in my cup of Benguet coffee. It was slightly fruity and with a faint taste of herbs.

Flavor Profile: Well-balanced, with herbal notes and a winey taste.

  • Matutum – The taste was more thin as compared to the first two and also smelled lighter.

Flavor Profile: Berrylike and spicy, with notes of cardamom and camphor

  • Kitanglad – The lightest of them all. To me it tasted slightly odd, almost floral.

Flavor Profile – Light and nutty, with floral undertones.

 

These Single Origin Arabica beans were all roasted to perfection by artisan roasters, they also reflect the vision of a brand that dreams of putting Philippine coffee back on the map. They are available at the following Bo’s Coffee branches: Bonifacio High Street, Glorietta 5, SM Mall of Asia, Newport, Galleria, Sm North EDSA, NAIA1, Jupiter Makati, Solenad and Megamall.

“A lot of changes are happening very soon for Bo’s Coffee,” Benitez explained. “Although our Philippine Origins product line and demo are both only available in certain stores in Manila, we’re planning to make a lot of changes in order to further improve everyone’s in-store experience.”
