A few weeks before race date, our school directress informed me of an upcoming run called I Run for Life which as organized for the benefit of children with Leukemia. I’m a sucker for runs especially if it’s for a good cause so I immediately searched the internet for more information on the run. Despite typing all the necessary keywords, I couldn’t seem to find any information on this run. After several attempts, I finally came across their site and found out that this run was not organized by any of the familiar race organizers, in fact, the run simply sprouted from someone’s idea to help.

I immediately contacted the organizers and volunteered to be a media partner to help promote their run. 100% of the proceeds was to be donated to the Hope for L.I.F.E. foundation which caters to children with Leukemia. I didn’t expect much from the run but was still excited nonetheless because of it’s humble cause.

I Run for Life: Race Day

Singlet and Race Kit distribution

Upon registration, runners would be provided a ticket. Runners are to present this ticket on race day in order to claim their singlet and race bib. When I found out about this, I was prepared for a chaotic beginning. I was glad that I was wrong! There were around 3-5 people at the registration booth and race bibs were arranged properly for easy dispersal. Runners were able to register, sign their waivers and claim their race kits in a jiffy. The race wasn’t a big event and there weren’t that many runners which is why it was quick and easy, nonetheless, the JCI team was able to properly prepare and keep things smooth.

Gun Start Time and Race Venue

Just like most runners. I was hesitant to join upon hearing  that the gun start for the 10km category won’t be till 6:45am. I thought it was too late and feared that it would already be too hot by the time I finish. The JCI team however assured me that the race venue, Dasmarinas Village, had a lot of trees thus making it the perfect venue for the race. In fairness to the team, there WERE a lot of trees which provided enough shade for runners all throughout the run. Moreover, the cloudy weather that morning and the soft drizzle made it perfect for a short run.

Hydration and Loot Bags

Given as this was a non-profit run, I honestly did not expect a lot. I was surprised to see that loot bags with a few items were still provided at the finish line. Moreover, organizers stuck by their word and provided several hydration booths all throughout the route, providing water, Gatorade and even juice for runners

After the race, several sponsors also gave away products such as notebooks, cupcakes, etc. There were even more than 20 items up for raffle! These items ranged from simple vouchers to a Samsung camera! Wow!

Marshals and Distance Markers

There weren’t too many marshals along the route, but there were markers to inform runners to go straight, turn left, turn rights etc. There were also security guards along the route, though they seemed to be assigned to the village itself and not the run as they often had no clue about the route. Nonetheless, I was glad I didn’t get lost thanks to all those banners.

Program Proper

After the run, a short program was held inside the function hall. It was fun ‘coz there were seats provided and the area was well ventilated. Besides the exciting raffles, children from the Hope for L.I.F.E. foundation also performed. It was a humbling experience to see these kids sing and dance with all their heart.

Lastly, this was the first run I participated in wherein the top 15 for each category – both male and female – were awarded and recognized. The top 3 finishers were given trophies and loot bags while the others were given medals.

Overall, I thought the run went pretty well. For a small run without any specific race director, they actually did quite well. I look forward to the next I Run For Life. There are any more lives worth running for!
