Cancer… what exactly is it? We hear the term several times, we know it is a deadly and life-threatening sickness and we might even know a person or two with the sickness, but do we really understand it?

What causes cancer?

“Cancer is ultimately the result of cells that uncontrollably grow and do not die. Normal cells in the body follow an orderly path of growth, division, and death. Programmed cell death is called apoptosis, and when this process breaks down, cancer begins to form. Unlike regular cells, cancer cells do not experience programmatic death and instead continue to grow and divide. This leads to a mass of abnormal cells that grows out of control.”

In 2010 alone, there were approximately 1,529,560 estimated new cases of cancer around the world, and approximately 569,490 of these people did not make it. The number of cancer victims throughout the world is saddening and these warriors continue to fight for their life day in and day out. A lot has already been taken away from them. They still have their lives but they stopped living it as they are stuck in the 4 walls of a hospital room and being medicated every hour trying to defeat the sickness. They want nothing more than to get out of there and return to their normal lives, but they can’t. Still, they do not give up.

A lot of us struggle to get up and go to work or school every day because we feel lazy, these people struggle to get up knowing each day might be their last.

I am NOT a doctor nor am I a scientist, but this doesn’t mean that there isn’t anything I can do to help. I am a child of God. I have gifts that can be of service.  In this case… I am a RUNNER! and I choose to be a RUNNER FOR A CAUSE. These people are warriors, but they still need all the help they can get.
