Ok, before you feel confused or wonder what I’m doing with flour and ears… it’s an art activity we did in class. We were trying to come up with a way to teach kids about personal hygiene and ear cleaning and this is what we came up with. It was really fun and the kids were really grossed out thinking that the colored flour was real ear wax!

We did the activity not to teach the kids how to clean their ears but to let the kids know WHY their parents need to help them clean their ears. Seeing all that “ear wax” did the trick!

What you will need

  • Flour
  • Water
  • Yellow Paint
  • 2 small cups (usually found at fast food chains to put sauce/condiments)
  • Child printout with enlarged ears
  • Cotton bud
  • Tissue
  • Glue
  • Scissors

What you will do:

Step 1: Print out a picture of a boy, girl or even an animal! Just make sure the ears are big enough to “clean”

Step 2: Punch holes on both ears

Step 4: Let the kids color the print out

Step 5: Create the mixture using flour and water (same recipe as goo) –Remember to only put a little water for the gooey and sticky effect

Step 6: Add a little yellow paint in the mixture to make it look like ear wax

Step 7: Place a little “ear wax” into the small cups

Step 8: Put a little glue on the lid of the cups and glue it behind the ears (don’t put too much glue so you can remove the cups later on)

Step 9: Hand the kids some buds and tissue and let them start cleaning the boy’s ears!

*The kids were really grossed out and really thought they were getting lots of ear wax from the print out. None of them even noticed the cups underneath!
