Let’s Walk Barefooted

What can your feet do? I can use my feet to walk, run and jump! But did you know your feet can also feel things?  We asked the children to bring a pair of slippers for our week’s topic about the feet! Instead of wearing shoes to school, they wore their slippers. And after a short discussion about the feet, it was time to take them for a SENSORY WALK.

Now, this could have been a lot more fun outdoors, unfortunately, the school I work at does not have a garden or a safe place outdoor. Outside our school is already the main road. Hence, we had to improvise! It would be a lot safer indoors anyway, at least we can eliminate the fear that they might step on something sharp and get hurt.

Prior to the activity, we had glued on a variety of materials on pieces of paper for the kids to walk on!

What you will need:

  • Large pieces of Paper
  • Small materials for children to walk on that vary in texture (coffee beans, cotton, shaving cream) –use whatever you already have lying around

We took some coffee beans from Starbucks! They give these for free. We also used some sand, cotton, shaving cream, water, etc. Just use whatever you have! I was also able to purchase a walking mat which we used for the occasion. Try it out yourself! The kids had so much fun and were literally speechless! Even my talkative kids suddenly kept quiet as they were going through the course! And when asked how it felt, they were at a lost! Of course, I described it to them one by one before and after, but it still feels different!
