Halloween is coming up so we decided to make some creepy spiders! I didn’t do the activity with my usual toddler class… instead I did it with my 7 year old tutee  and her 2 year old brother.

Before beginning the activity, you can always sing the famous Itsy Bitsy Spider! Older kids might find this boring, but my 2 year old student sure loves this song! I always like pretending my hands are spiders and then I start tickling the kids! The kids really have fun playing this that I sometimes take advantage of the opportunity. I would sometimes say, “Uh-oh, the spider will crawl up to my head! Where’s my head?” and the child would point the body part I mentioned! Perfect example of learning while at play!

After that short introduction… you can start making your creepy crawlies!

.

What you will need:

  • Styrofoam ball
  • Googly Eyes
  • Fuzzy Wires/Pipe Cleaners
  • Paint
  • Glue
  • Scissors
  • Yarn (optional)
  • Marker (optional)
  • Clear Plastic (optional)

.

Step 1: Put the styrofoam ball into the plastic and put some paint in the plastic. I originally planned to use black but my little girl wanted blue! So I let her.

You can always just paint the ball. I decided to let the kids try this for a new experience.

.

Step 2: Spread the paint all over the ball. Shake and roll!

.

.

Step 3: Let the paint dry. Take some fuzzy wires, cut the long ones to make them shorter. You will need 8pcs. for the legs and 1 piece to hang the spider

.

.

Step 4: Insert the 8 pieces of fuzzy wires for the legs

.

Step 5: Glue on the googly eyes

.

Step 6: Insert 1 fuzzy wire through the top of the spider and tie a piece of yarn around it.

.

Step 7: Draw the spider’s smile!

I originally did not plan to make the spider smile, but the kids requested that the spider smile! Hence, this was the result. Creepy but CUTE spiders!
